About Coshal
Coshal works with artisan communities in Chhattisgarh to bring traditional Dhokra (lost-wax brass casting) into modern homes, offices and corporate gifting. Every piece is handmade. Our job is to design products that respect the craft and sell in today's market.
The role
We're looking for a freelance product designer to create a new collection of Dhokra products that are commercially viable: beautiful, practical to make by hand, and easy to sell in the gifting and decor market.
Type: Freelance / Contract
Location: Remote, with one 4–5 day visit to Kondagaon, Chhattisgarh
Duration: About 6–8 weeks, starting November 2026
What you'll do
- Design 10 new Dhokra products for the gifting and decor market
- Create a detailed spec sheet for each design: dimensions, views, material notes, finish and construction details
- Keep every design commercially viable and practical to produce by hand, suited to lost-wax casting and wax-thread detailing
- Draw on traditional motifs and stories, but adapt them for modern desks, homes and gift boxes
- Spend 4–5 days in Kondagaon with our trainer and artisans, to align on the designs, understand production on the ground, and keep the work moving forward
- Review the first samples with our team and refine the designs based on the workshop's feedback
What we're looking for
- A portfolio in product, craft, metal or decor design
- Understanding of, or a real interest in, Indian handicrafts. Dhokra or metal-casting experience is a big plus
- Ability to design products that sell, not just look positive
- Clear technical drawings and spec sheets (sketch + CAD/Illustrator, or similar)
- Comfortable working with artisans and trainers, and taking feedback from the workshop floor
- Hindi is a plus
Deliverables
- 10 final designs with spec sheets (print-ready PDF and source files)
- Revisions after sample review
- All designs are created exclusively for Coshal
