Our commitment to state-of-the-art solutions spans the entire product value chain, delivering next-generation software, end-to-end IoT solutions, cloud infrastructure management, and managed IT support services.
About the Role
We are looking for a Cloud FinOps Engineer to own the design, development, and ongoing operation of a cloud cost and billing data platform.
This is a hands-on engineering role, not a reporting-only or data-science position. You will build reliable, recurring pipelines that ingest cloud billing and usage data, transform it into accurate and auditable cost models, and make it available through dashboards and other business-facing tools.
The role requires a combination of data engineering, cloud cost management, SQL/Python, commercial billing logic, security, and financial-data discipline.
You will work in a highly autonomous environment where you are expected to make sound technical decisions, handle ambiguity, and build systems that remain reliable as billing periods, cloud services, SKUs, pricing models, and customer requirements evolve.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cloud Billing & Cost Data Engineering
- Design and build production-grade pipelines to ingest, transform, validate, and store cloud cost and usage data.
- Work with billing exports such as:
o AWS Cost & Usage Reports (CUR)
o Azure Cost Management exports
o Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Cost and Usage Reports
o Google Cloud Billing exports
- Build reusable data models for cloud spend, usage, pricing, discounts, allocations, and customer-level cost visibility.
- Normalize complex billing data into clean and maintainable schemas suitable for downstream reporting and commercial use.
- Handle large-volume billing datasets while maintaining accuracy, traceability, and performance.
2. Recurring Billing-Cycle Pipelines
- Design pipelines that reliably process new billing data on a recurring monthly/daily cycle without manual intervention.
- Build pipelines with appropriate idempotency, validation, error handling, monitoring, and recovery mechanisms.
- Account for real-world billing-data changes such as:
oNew cloud services or SKUs
oSchema changes
oMissing or delayed records
oChanges in pricing structures
oNew cost categories
oPreviously unseen usage patterns
- Ensure that pipelines continue to operate correctly as cloud providers and billing exports evolve.
- Distinguish between one-time ETL work and genuinely maintainable, recurring production pipelines.
3. SQL & Data Modeling
- Write advanced SQL for complex transformations, reconciliations, aggregations, and cost allocation.
- Design and maintain appropriate schemas, tables, relationships, and data models.
- Build logic that supports accurate customer, service, account, resource, and cost-level analysis.
- Perform data validation and reconciliation to identify discrepancies between source billing data and processed outputs.
- Optimize queries and data structures for performance and maintainability.
4. Python & Automation
- Use Python or an equivalent scripting language to automate data ingestion, transformation, validation, reconciliation, and operational tasks.
- Develop clean, reusable, maintainable code rather than one-off scripts.
- Automate recurring billing workflows and reduce manual intervention wherever practical.
- Implement appropriate logging, exception handling, validation, and auditability.
5. ETL / Orchestration
- Build and maintain data pipelines using tools such as Airflow, dbt, or equivalent orchestration and transformation frameworks.
- Where heavy tooling is unnecessary,
demonstrate the ability to build reliable pipelines using simpler, well-engineered approaches.
- Define appropriate pipeline dependencies, schedules, retries, failure handling, and data-quality checks.
- Maintain clear separation between raw, transformed, and business-ready datasets.
6. Cloud Cost Allocation & Commercial Logic
- Translate cloud pricing structures and commercial agreements into accurate computational logic.
- Work with rate cards, discount structures, pricing tiers, minimum commitments, markups, and allocation rules.
- Understand the difference between provider cost, allocated cost, and customer-facing/commercial cost.
- Validate that pricing logic accurately reflects contractual terms.
- Identify and escalate ambiguous, incomplete, or conflicting commercial requirements rather than making unsupported assumptions.
- Build auditable calculations that can be traced back to source data and applicable pricing rules.
7. Data Security & Multi-Tenant Architecture
- Design and maintain secure data models for multi-tenant cloud cost environments.
- Ensure proprietary cost and pricing information is appropriately segregated between customers, internal users, and other stakeholders.
- Implement or work with controls such as:
o Row-level security
o Field-level masking
o Role-based access control
o Data segregation
o Secure data access
- Understand the security implications of exposing billing, pricing, margin, or contractual information to different audiences.
- Maintain appropriate auditability and access controls around sensitive financial data.
8. BI & Dashboarding
- Make processed cost and usage data available through BI and visualization platforms such as:
o Looker
o Power BI
o Metabase
o Tableau
- Develop or support dashboards for cloud spend, usage, allocation, trends, and cost analysis.
- Ensure dashboard outputs are backed by reliable and well-defined underlying data models.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business questions into meaningful data views.
9. Spreadsheet-Based Financial Modeling
- Use spreadsheets effectively for rate-card modeling, reconciliations, pricing calculations, validation, and ad hoc commercial analysis.
- Build formula-driven and auditable spreadsheet models rather than relying on hardcoded outputs.
- Ensure spreadsheet calculations can be reviewed, understood, and handed over to non-technical stakeholders.
- Reconcile spreadsheet outputs against system-generated data where required.
10. Billing Accuracy, Reconciliation & Auditability
- Develop mechanisms to reconcile processed billing data against source cloud-provider data.
- Investigate discrepancies and identify the underlying cause.
- Maintain clear data lineage from raw billing records transformation logic allocated cost customer-facing output.
- Support billing investigations, disputes, and audit requirements where necessary.
- Maintain sufficient evidence and documentation to explain how cost figures were calculated.
11. Documentation & System Ownership
- Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for pipelines, schemas, business rules, pricing logic, access controls, and operational procedures.
- Maintain runbooks for recurring billing operations and failure scenarios.
- Document assumptions, dependencies, known limitations, and data-quality considerations.
- Take ownership of systems from initial design through production operation and continuous improvement.
Must-Have Qualifications
Technical Skills
- 5+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, cloud FinOps, cloud cost engineering, billing systems,
platform engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong intermediate-to-advanced SQL skills, including schema design, complex transformations, joins, aggregations, and data modeling.
- Strong Python or equivalent scripting experience.
- Hands-on experience building and operating production data pipelines.
- Experience with at least one major cloud provider's billing/cost data:
o AWS CUR
o Azure Cost Management
o OCI Cost and Usage Reports
o GCP Billing exports
- Experience with ETL/ELT and pipeline orchestration, using tools such as Airflow, dbt, or equivalent.
- Experience designing recurring production pipelines, preferably involving monthly billing cycles.
- Experience with at least one BI/dashboarding platform such as Power BI, Looker, Metabase, or Tableau.
- Strong understanding of data quality, validation, reconciliation, lineage, and auditability.
- Experience working with multi-tenant data and access-control requirements.
- Understanding of row-level security, field-level masking, or equivalent data-segregation mechanisms.
- Ability to understand commercial pricing structures and translate rate cards, discounts, pricing tiers, and minimum commitments into technical logic.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Direct experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
- Experience in an MSP, cloud reseller, hosting provider, or managed-services environment.
- Experience managing cloud cost pass-through or customer billing.
- Experience working in an early-stage, resource-constrained, or highly autonomous environment.
- Experience with SSO / SAML integrations.
- Experience handling billing disputes, financial-data audits, or data lineage requirements.
- Experience with FinOps frameworks, cloud cost optimization, or cloud financial management practices.
- Relevant cloud or FinOps certifications.
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate is someone who can own the problem end-to-end.
You should be comfortable moving from:
Raw cloud billing export Data ingestion Transformation Cost allocation Commercial logic Validation Secure data access Dashboard / business output
You should also be comfortable asking:
- What happens when the next billing cycle introduces a new SKU?
- How will the pipeline behave if the same export is processed twice?
- How do we identify missing or duplicated billing records?
- How do we reconcile our calculated costs against the provider's bill?
- Which customers should be able to see which cost information?
- How do we translate a discount clause in a contract into deterministic calculation logic?
- How can another engineer understand and operate this system six months from now?
Key Success Measures
Success in this role will be measured by the ability to:
- Build and maintain reliable recurring billing-data pipelines.
- Process current billing cycles with minimal manual intervention.
- Maintain accurate and auditable cost calculations.
- Detect and handle schema changes, new SKUs, and unexpected billing data.
- Maintain secure separation of customer and proprietary cost information.
- Translate commercial pricing requirements into correct technical logic.
- Provide trustworthy data for dashboards and downstream billing processes.
