Engineering Lead, India — Job Description (Night Shift)
About the role
We're hiring a hands-on Engineering Lead to run our India team and keep building alongside them. You'll lead a full software development team, spanning development, QA and test automation, and spend roughly half your time designing, writing and reviewing code.
You'll be the bridge between our US and India teams. That means understanding requirements deeply, explaining technical decisions clearly, and making sure what the team ships is reliable and HIPAA-compliant.
Healthcare software development experience is required for this role.
What you'll do
Lead the India team
- Lead a full software development team across development, QA and test automation: set priorities, run sprint planning and standups, and remove blockers.
- Grow each person through regular 1:1s, code review, honest feedback and clear goals.
- Set team standards for code quality, branching, documentation, testing and releases.
- Lead hiring and onboarding as the team grows.
- Drive AI-assisted development across the team, from coding with Claude Code to AI-assisted test generation.
Build hands-on
- Design, build and review code across the stack: React/Next.js, Python/FastAPI and PostgreSQL on GCP.
- Take on the hardest technical work yourself, including architecture, healthcare integrations and AI features.
- Build LLM-powered features and the evals behind them together with the US team.
- Review significant changes before they ship, with extra rigor on code that touches PHI.
Own quality and delivery
- Own the India team's delivery: estimates, sprint commitments, timelines and release readiness.
- Define the test strategy with your QA and automation engineers, covering manual, automated, regression and performance testing.
- Expand test automation in CI so regressions are caught before release.
- Lead incident response and root-cause analysis for issues your team owns.
Communicate across teams
- Be the main point of contact between the India team and US product, engineering and operations.
- Turn requirements into clear technical plans and tasks, and confirm shared understanding before work starts.
- Explain technical decisions, trade-offs and risks clearly to engineers and non-technical stakeholders, including clinicians.
- Keep documentation current: design docs, runbooks, release notes and onboarding guides.
- Keep daily overlap with US business hours for planning, reviews and escalations.
Keep patient data safe
- Make sure the team follows HIPAA requirements: least-privilege access, audit logging and secure handling of PHI.
- Keep PHI out of development and test environments by using de-identified or synthetic data.
- Partner with security and compliance on audits, risk assessments and team training.
What success looks like
- 30 days: You know the product, codebase and workflows. You've held 1:1s with each team member and key US stakeholders, and shipped your first change.
- 60 days: You're running sprint planning and releases for the India team, with transparent code review and testing standards in place.
- 90 days: You've delivered a significant feature end to end, agreed growth goals with each team member, and set a plan to expand automated test coverage.
What we're looking for
Required
Healthcare
- Hands-on experience building healthcare software in production, such as clinical, billing, claims or patient-facing systems.
- Working knowledge of HIPAA and how to handle PHI safely in day-to-day development.
- Experience with at least one healthcare data standard: HL7 v2, FHIR R4 or X12 837/835.
Leadership
- 6+ years of professional software development, including at least 2 years leading or managing engineers.
- A track record of managing both developers and QA: running sprints, giving feedback,
growing people and delivering on commitments.
- Sound judgment on priorities and trade-offs, and the confidence to push back when something isn't right.
Understanding and explaining
- You understand requirements quickly and ask the right questions before building.
- You explain complex technical topics simply, to engineers and non-technical stakeholders alike.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with experience working closely with US-based teams across time zones.
Technical
- Strong full-stack skills: Python (FastAPI or Django), React/Next.js with TypeScript, and PostgreSQL.
- Cloud deployment with Docker and CI/CD, on GCP or an equivalent platform.
- Solid QA practice: test strategy, automation frameworks (such as Playwright, Selenium or pytest) and CI integration.
- Daily use of AI coding tools (Claude Code or similar), and experience helping a team adopt them well.
Preferred
- Experience building LLM-powered features, agents or evals in production.
- Experience leading an India-based team for a US healthcare company.
- Security practices such as OWASP, secure code review, and SOC 2 or HITRUST environments.
- Temporal, Terraform or BigQuery.
- Monitoring and logging tools.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

You don't need every tool on day one; we expect you to pick up what you haven't used.
