Staff Engineer – Trust, Controls & Safety
Location: Remote / India
About the Company
Our client is a fast-growing, AI-powered business operating system that gives agencies, entrepreneurs and SMBs the infrastructure to build, automate and scale. The platform supports over 1 million businesses across 150+ countries and has generated billions of dollars in ecosystem value for its customers.
Behind the product is serious scale: billions of API hits and message events every day, hundreds of terabytes of distributed data, and 250+ microservices. The company is a global, remote-first organisation of 2,000+ people across 10+ countries, built for speed and ownership.
About the Team
Even a simple configuration error can lead to significant unintended usage. The Trust, Controls & Safety team builds the safeguards that protect customers and the platform from both accidental surges and intentional abuse.
As Staff Engineer, you will lead the technical direction of a real-time platform that secures critical workflows: signups, SaaS checkouts, user management and global communication usage. The system processes 160M+ events and $4M+ in transactions every day.
The challenge is to build a highly available, low-latency control plane that balances strict enforcement with a seamless user experience. By combining synchronous metering with asynchronous signal correlation, you will help the platform stay ahead of evolving fraud vectors while legitimate business activity continues without friction. Getting this right means customers stop receiving bills they never intended, and abuse stops being a cost the honest majority carries.
What You'll Do
- Architecture: Set the technical direction for the trust and controls platform, including metering, rules and policy engines, velocity checks and enforcement.
- Data systems: Redesign and optimise data models,
queries and indexing across MongoDB, Firestore and ElasticSearch.
- Search at scale: Own ElasticSearch reliability, covering ingestion, indexing, shard strategy and query performance across billions of documents.
- Reliability and performance: Eliminate bottlenecks, improve replication health, and keep query and index latency predictable.
- System design: Define data flows and integration boundaries between storage, cache and APIs, with transparent contracts and fault isolation.
- Observability: Build visibility into every data path, including metrics, traces, slow-query logs, replication lag and cluster health dashboards.
- Quality: Enforce unit, integration and load testing standards across backend modules.
- Engineering culture: Drive RFCs, ADRs and design reviews, and codify patterns that make good engineering repeatable.
- Hands-on leadership: Write code, design systems and debug production issues. Lead by technical example.
- Mentorship: Level up engineers across squads, and partner with EMs, PMs, Finance, Risk, Support and channel teams.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years building high-scale, mission-critical backend systems where p99 regressions are unacceptable.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems: concurrency, event-driven architectures and consistency primitives such as CAS, atomic dry-runs and idempotency.
- Experience with systems where correctness has direct financial consequences: metering, ledgers, billing, payment gateways,
reservations or similar transactional domains.
- Solid experience with relational and NoSQL data models, especially complex transactional data, plus working knowledge of streaming and analytical stores for time-windowed aggregation.
- Experience designing policy- or rules-driven systems that change through configuration rather than deploys, including versioning, safe rollout and rollback.
- Sound judgement on the enforcement trade-off: setting thresholds and actions that stop real harm without punishing legitimate customers, and measuring whether you got it right.
- Familiarity with monitoring, SLOs and root-cause analysis in production.
- A track record of technical leadership without formal authority: driving cross-team architecture to a decision and writing designs others build from.
- Excellent communication and collaboration with Finance, Risk and Support stakeholders.
- A pragmatic, hands-on approach that balances long-term vision with iterative execution.
Preferred Experience
- Building fraud, abuse or adversarial defence systems at scale: rules engines, velocity checks, risk scoring.
- Hands-on production experience with Go and Node.js on latency-sensitive, high-throughput paths.
- Redis (including Lua), Kafka, Flink or Kafka Streams, and ClickHouse or BigQuery for real-time aggregation.
- Experience taking early architecture through to a load-bearing platform during hyper-growth.
- Exposure to billing and metered systems, and to AI tooling, including hallucination-mitigation approaches.
Nice to Have
- ElasticSearch cluster management, multi-tenant indexing or lifecycle policies.
- OLAP systems such as ClickHouse.
- Open-source contributions or public technical writing on systems design or database performance.
