A (JD) for an NPD (Recent Product Development) Tooling Engineer specializing in plastic injection molding outlines the end-to-end responsibility of taking a plastic component from concept or 3D CAD design through mold building, trials, and mass production handoff.
Role Overview & Objective
- Job Title: NPD Engineer / Manager – Tooling & Injection Molding
- Department: New Product Development (NPD) / Engineering / Tool Room
- Objective: Manage the design, development, procurement, and validation of plastic injection molds to ensure parts meet functional, aesthetic, cost, and timeline requirements.
1. Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & Moldability Analysis:
- Review 3D part geometries for draft angles, wall thickness, sink marks, and parting lines.
- Perform mold flow analysis (e.g., using Moldflow/Ansys) to predict fill time, warpage, and air traps.
- Mold Design & Engineering:
- Design 3D/2D injection molds (core, cavity, slider, lifter, and hot/cold runner systems) using CAD software like CATIA, Creo, SolidWorks, or NX.
- Select appropriate tool steels and materials (e.g., P20, H13, 420 stainless steel) based on production volume and lifespan.
- Vendor & Tool Room Management:
- Coordinate with internal tool rooms or external mold makers to track machining (CNC, EDM, wire-cutting, polishing).
- Monitor tooling fabrication schedules, budgets,
and cost optimization goals.
- Trial & Validation (T0, T1, T2 Trials):
- Oversee initial mold testing (T0/T1) to check dimensions, part fitment, and cosmetic appearance against engineering drawings.
- Implement corrective actions, texture applications, and fine-tuning leading to final customer/internal approval (T2).
- Quality & Documentation:
- Lead APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) submissions for molded components.
- Maintain technical documentation, BOMs (Bills of Materials), and tool maintenance records.
1. Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: B.E. / B.Tech or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Tool and Die Making, or Plastics Technology.
- Experience: Typically 3 to 10+ years of hands-on experience in plastic injection mold development and NPD.
- Software Proficiency:
- CAD/CAM: SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, UG/NX.
- Simulation: Moldflow analysis tools.
- Core Competencies:
- Deep understanding of plastic resin properties (ABS, PP, PC, Nylon, etc.) and shrink rates.
- Knowledge of GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and metrology equipment.
- Familiarity with quality standards (IATF 16949, ISO 9001) and APQP/PPAP workflows.
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per month
Work Location: In person
