Job Summary A Biomedical Engineer is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning, safety, reliability, and availability of all medical equipment used in the hospital. The role involves preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment calibration coordination, installation, commissioning, and technical support to clinical departments.

Roles and Responsibilities

Medical Equipment Maintenance

- Perform preventive maintenance of all medical equipment as per the scheduled maintenance plan.

- Attend equipment breakdown complaints and perform corrective maintenance.

- Troubleshoot technical issues and ensure timely equipment restoration.

- Ensure all medical equipment is maintained in valuable working condition.

- Coordinate with OEMs and external service providers for major repairs.

Medical Equipment Management

- Maintain an updated inventory of all medical equipment.

- Coordinate installation, commissioning, and acceptance testing of new equipment.

- Monitor equipment performance, utilization, and downtime.

- Assist in the procurement and technical evaluation of medical equipment.

- Maintain equipment history cards and service records.

Calibration and Safety

- Coordinate periodic calibration of medical equipment.

- Conduct functional verification and electrical safety checks.

- Ensure equipment operates within manufacturer-recommended specifications.

- Maintain calibration certificates and electrical safety reports.

- Identify and report unsafe or malfunctioning equipment.

Clinical Department Support

- Provide technical support to ICU, NICU, and emergency departments.

- Support operation theatre equipment maintenance.

- Attend complaints from wards, dialysis, radiology, laboratory, and other clinical departments.

- Provide operational guidance to doctors, nurses, and technicians.

- Ensure critical medical equipment is available for patient care.

Quality and Regulatory Compliance





- Support NABH accreditation requirements related to medical equipment management.

- Follow hospital policies and biomedical engineering procedures.

- Maintain equipment maintenance and breakdown documentation.

- Support equipment risk assessment and safety audits.

- Ensure compliance with applicable medical device regulations and manufacturer guidelines.

Documentation and Reporting

- Maintain preventive and corrective maintenance records.

- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance reports.

- Maintain equipment downtime and breakdown reports.

- Update equipment inventory and maintenance schedules.

- Prepare equipment performance and utilization reports.

Technical Knowledge and Equipment Handling

- Patient monitors, ECG machines, and pulse oximeters.

- ICU ventilators and anaesthesia workstations.

- Defibrillators and infusion pumps.

- Syringe pumps and suction machines.

- Electrosurgical units and OT tables.

- Surgical lights and operating theatre equipment.

- Ultrasound and X-ray equipment.

- CT and MRI systems.

- Dialysis machines.

- Laboratory equipment.

Educational Qualification

- Diploma in Biomedical Engineering.

- B.E. / B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering.

- Electronics and Instrumentation or related engineering qualifications, depending on hospital requirements.
