Digital Polygon is looking for an experienced Technical Architect – Open Source CMS (Drupal or WordPress) to join our growing team.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will be expected to actively contribute to development while also owning architecture, technical decisions, client discussions, estimation, and mentoring. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable writing production code, solving complex technical problems, designing scalable solutions, and leading technical discussions.
You should have a solid track record of building complex open-source CMS solutions (Drupal or WordPress) and the ability to take technical ownership from discovery and architecture through development, deployment, and ongoing support.
If you enjoy staying close to the code, solving difficult problems, mentoring developers, working directly with clients, and continuously improving how teams build and deliver software, we'd love to hear from you.
About Digital PolygonDigital Polygon is a team of industry veterans focused on building long-term partnerships with our clients rather than simply delivering projects. From strategy and architecture to development and ongoing support, our goal is straightforward: BUILD IT BETTER.
We continuously look for ways to improve how we work, how we deliver, and the results we create for our customers.
What You'll Do
- Take technical ownership of projects while remaining actively involved in hands-on development.
- Design, architect, develop, debug, and maintain complex enterprise websites and custom applications built on Drupal or WordPress.
- Write production-quality PHP code and contribute directly to complex technical implementations across Drupal or WordPress platforms.
- Define application architecture, technical standards, development patterns, and best practices.
- Make architectural decisions around custom development, plugins, APIs, integrations, databases, caching, security, and infrastructure.
- Translate business and client requirements into practical, scalable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions.
- Act as a technical point of contact for clients and lead technical discovery, solution discussions, architecture reviews, and technical presentations.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to developers and delivery teams.
- Conduct code reviews and provide feedback on architecture, coding standards, security, performance, and maintainability.
- Work closely with Project Managers on planning, backlog refinement, prioritization, estimation, and technical decisions.
- Help scope and estimate technical work for new projects and complex development initiatives.
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, and technical debt early and work with the team to address them.
- Troubleshoot complex application, integration, performance, infrastructure, and production issues.
- Support deployments, releases, production troubleshooting, and technical incident resolution.
- Mentor developers and help teams improve their technical skills and development practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve development processes, tooling, automation, and engineering efficiency.
- Contribute to technical discovery, proposals, solutioning, and business development activities when needed.
- Stay current with Drupal or WordPress, PHP, cloud platforms, DevOps practices, and modern web development technologies.
What We're Looking For
- Have professional experience in web development, with strong hands-on experience designing, developing, debugging, and architecting complex Drupal or WordPress solutions.
- Proven experience working as a Technical Lead, Technical Architect, Lead Developer, or senior engineering leader in a professional services or agency environment.
- Strong experience designing and delivering medium to large-scale web applications using enterprise open-source content management systems.
- Strong hands-on PHP development experience and a solid understanding of modern web development practices.
- Deep understanding of Drupal or WordPress architectures, including custom themes and modules/plugins, Gutenberg/block development, Drush/WP-CLI, REST APIs, custom content types/post types, caching, database optimization, security, and third-party integrations.
- Solid experience writing and maintaining production-quality PHP code for open-source CMS platforms.
- Experience with Git, Composer, WP-CLI, NPM, and modern development workflows.
- Experience with local development environments such as DDEV, Lando, Docker, or similar platforms.
- Experience working with managed hosting and cloud platforms such as Pantheon, WP Engine, Acquia, or similar platforms.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD, automated deployments, and release management.

security, or DevOps.
