Hirely is recruiting Physics PhD Scientific Coding Experts on behalf of a hiring partner for a scientific computing and AI evaluation project.
You’ll use your advanced physics and scientific programming expertise to author original, executable research problems designed to test the capabilities of frontier AI models.
The work combines physics research, scientific computing, technical problem design, and AI evaluation.
What You’ll Do
- Develop original, challenging scientific computing problems based on published research, datasets, open-source projects, or scenarios you design.
- Write rigorous scientific prompts requiring meaningful physical and computational reasoning.
- Build detailed grading criteria that define what constitutes a correct solution.
- Create executable evaluation tasks using scientific computing workflows.
- Test and refine problems for mathematical, physical, and computational correctness.
- Calibrate tasks against advanced AI models and refine them to ensure meaningful difficulty.
- Work through a Git/GitHub pull-request workflow with automated quality checks.
- Ensure tasks are reproducible, technically rigorous, and clearly documented.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated depth in at least two of the following areas:
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Optics
- Quantum Information / Quantum Computing
- Computational Physics
- Astrophysics
- Particle Physics
- Working proficiency in Python, R, or another relevant programming language for scientific computing.
- Comfortable using Git/GitHub and working with code repositories.
- Experience running or developing code in Docker.
- Strong scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to write clear,
rigorous technical problems and evaluation criteria.
Relevant Backgrounds Candidates with experience in Computational Physics, Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics, Quantum Computing, Quantum Information, Astrophysics, Particle Physics, Scientific Computing, Mathematical Physics, Computational Science, Scientific Software, Research Engineering, or Physics Research may be a strong fit.
Preferred Qualifications
- Peer-reviewed publications in physics, computational science, or related fields.
- Prior scientific software development or research engineering experience.
- Experience working with scientific datasets or open-source research repositories.
- Experience developing reproducible computational experiments.
- Familiarity with scientific Python/R ecosystems and numerical or simulation-based computing.
- Previous experience with AI evaluation, benchmark development, or technical task authoring is a plus.
Compensation & Work Arrangement
- $70/hour

Important: This is a highly specialized technical role. Candidates should have advanced physics expertise combined with practical scientific programming experience. A general physics background without depth in the specified subdomains and scientific coding experience may not be sufficient.
