Job summary

Role Purpose

We are seeking an experienced Non-Functional Test Engineer whose primary expertise is Apache JMeter, complemented by hands-on functional test automation using Playwright with TypeScript. The role will define, automate, execute, and analyse performance and resilience tests for distributed, message-driven applications. The engineer will also contribute to functional regression automation and use approved AI-assisted quality-engineering techniques to improve test design, coverage, analysis, and delivery speed.

Core objective: provide evidence-based assurance that services are performant, scalable, resilient, and functionally reliable under realistic operating conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Non-Functional Testing Primary Focus

- Develop and maintain the non-functional test strategy, plans, scenarios, scripts,

datasets, execution schedules, and evidence.
- Design and implement JMeter tests covering load, volume, stress, capacity, spike,

scalability, endurance, soak, concurrency, throughput, resilience, failover, and recovery.
- Test APIs, databases, messaging interfaces, asynchronous processing, batch

processes, and end-to-end business workflows.
- Build realistic workload models using production volumes, transaction profiles, peak

periods, growth forecasts, and service-level requirements.
- Validate response time, throughput, percentile latency, error rate, resource utilisation,

recovery behaviour, and data integrity against agreed non-functional requirements.
- Configure distributed and non-GUI JMeter execution and integrate performance tests

into CI/CD pipelines.
- Correlate test results with application, JVM, database, infrastructure, network, and

messaging metrics.
- Identify bottlenecks and collaborate with developers, architects, platform engineers,

operations teams, and database specialists on remediation.
- Produce clear test reports, trend analysis, risk assessments, and evidence-based

release recommendations.
- Maintain reusable performance-test frameworks and establish repeatable baselines for

regression comparison.
- Support testing of Java and Spring Boot microservices, Kafka-based processing, IBM MQ

interfaces, and PostgreSQL-backed services.
- Exercise component-failure, dependency-failure, retry, backlog, recovery, and

active/active scenarios while verifying that processing does not lose or duplicate messages.

Functional Automation Secondary Focus

- Develop and maintain automated functional and regression tests using Playwright with

TypeScript.

- Automate user-interface, API, integration, and end-to-end business scenarios.
- Implement reusable page objects, fixtures, test-data utilities, assertions, and reporting

components.
- Validate functional behaviour, error handling, audit records, role-based access, and

cross-system message flows.
- Integrate Playwright suites into CI/CD pipelines and support parallel and cross-browser

execution.
- Investigate flaky tests and improve automation reliability, maintainability, and execution

time.
- Work with functional testers and business analysts to convert acceptance criteria into

traceable automated tests. AI-Enabled Quality Engineering

- Use approved AI tools to accelerate test-scenario and edge-case generation, JMeter and

Playwright script creation, synthetic test-data preparation, log analysis, result interpretation, defect investigation, automation refactoring, and documentation.
- Apply human review and validation to every AI-generated test asset, recommendation,

and finding.
- Evaluate AI-assisted outputs for correctness, reproducibility, security, traceability, and

maintainability.
- Protect confidential information, credentials, production payloads, personal data, and

source code when using AI tools.
- Promote responsible AI adoption while ensuring that final quality and release decisions

remain evidence-based and human-owned.

Essential Skills and Experience

- Strong commercial experience in non-functional, performance, scalability, and

resilience testing.
- Advanced hands-on expertise with Apache JMeter, including thread groups, workload

modelling, parameterisation, correlation, assertions, timers, controllers, extractors, Groovy/JSR223 scripting, distributed execution, and non-GUI operation.
- Experience testing REST APIs, asynchronous services, messaging platforms, databases,

and end-to-end integrations.
- Ability to interpret CPU, memory, JVM, garbage collection, thread, connection-pool,

database, Kafka, and network metrics.
- Strong understanding of latency, throughput, concurrency, percentiles, saturation,

queuing, scalability, and capacity planning.
- Practical functional-automation experience using Playwright and TypeScript.
- Good knowledge of API testing, SQL, JSON, XML, Git, and CI/CD practices.

- Experience with observability tools such as Splunk, Grafana, Dynatrace, AppDynamics,

DX APM, or equivalent.
- Robust diagnostic skills and the ability to distinguish test-tool limitations from

application, data, dependency, or infrastructure defects.
- Ability to explain technical findings clearly to engineering teams and non-technical

stakeholders.
- Experience working in Agile or specification-driven delivery environments.

Desirable Skills

- Experience with Java, Spring Boot, Kafka or Kafka Streams, IBM MQ, PostgreSQL, and

microservice architectures.
- Experience testing services deployed to PCF, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, or

active/active environments.
- Knowledge of Kafka partitions, consumer groups, lag, rebalancing, retries, dead-letter

handling, and message ordering.
- Experience with resilience and disaster-recovery testing across multiple sites or

availability zones.
- Familiarity with accessibility, security, and compatibility automation.
- Experience with GitLab CI, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or similar delivery pipelines.
- Exposure to complementary performance tools such as k6, Gatling, LoadRunner, or

BlazeMeter.
- Understanding of financial-services, payment-processing, or other high-availability

regulated environments.
- A relevant testing certification, such as ISTQB, is advantageous.

Expected Deliverables

- Non-functional test strategy and detailed test plans.
- A maintainable JMeter performance-test framework and reusable scripts.
- Realistic workload, capacity, and test-data models.
- Automated Playwright and TypeScript regression suites.
- Performance baselines and release-to-release comparisons.
- Defect reports supported by logs, metrics, and repeatable evidence.
- Execution reports containing percentile-based analysis, risks, and recommendations.
- Traceability between requirements, acceptance criteria, tests, results, and defects.
- AI-assisted QA practices with documented human review and governance controls.

Success Measures

- Performance, capacity, scalability, and resilience risks are identified before production

release.
- Test evidence demonstrates compliance with agreed service levels and non-functional

requirements.
- JMeter and Playwright automation is stable, maintainable, repeatable, and integrated

into CI/CD.
- Responsible AI assistance reduces test-preparation and diagnostic effort without

weakening controls.
- Release recommendations are clear, timely, and supported by measurable evidence.
- Quality engineering is effectively coordinated across QA, development, architecture,

infrastructure, operations, and business teams
