Job Description:
Database Administrator ( strong Netezza experience)
Setting
The DBAs will support a data warehouse ecosystem utilizing:
- Oracle
- SQL Server
- Netezza
Current workload distribution is approximately:
- Netezza: 50%
- Oracle: 25%
- The client is also moving heavily toward Oracle Exadata and would strongly prefer candidates with Exadata and RAC experience.
- SQL Server: 25%
Responsibilities:
Application DBA Support
This role is primarily an Application DBA function focused on project delivery and operational support rather than infrastructure management.
Key responsibilities include:
- Database deployments
- Environment support
- User and security administration
- Performance monitoring and troubleshooting
- Backup and recovery support
- Database access and permissions management
- Ticket management and issue resolution
- Participation in project delivery activities
DBAs will act as a first point of contact for database-related issues, including:
Performance Monitoring
- Locking and blocking issues
- Long-running jobs
- Data processing failures
- Missing or ineffective indexes
- SQL performance troubleshooting
Operational Support
- Reviewing database logs
- Monitoring CPU and storage utilization
- Troubleshooting database job failures
- Diagnosing environment issues and escalating when necessary
The role functions largely as an L2/L3 support resource responsible for initial investigation and resolution.
Build and Deployment Support
The team supports data warehouse development projects through:
Build Activities
- Reviewing code changes
- Merging code into GitHub repositories
- Supporting development teams during implementation
Deployment Activities
- Executing database deployment scripts
- Following deployment instructions packaged through ServiceNow/Jira workflows
- Supporting deployments into QA and UAT environments
- Troubleshooting deployment issues
Deployment work typically represents 1–2 hours per day, while the majority of effort is spent supporting project teams.
DBAs become actively involved as solutions progress through:
1. Development
2. QA
3. UAT
4. Release/Deployment
Typical responsibilities include:
- Supporting QA environments
- Assisting with database changes between environments
- Troubleshooting integration and testing issues
- Supporting project teams throughout the delivery lifecycle
Developers primarily manage Development environments, while DBAs provide support as projects move into QA and UAT.
Administrative Responsibilities
Expected activities include:
- User provisioning and access management
- Security administration
- Account unlocks and permission requests
- Monitoring ticket queues
- Backup and recovery support
Database creation and infrastructure provisioning are generally handled by separate teams.
Project Engagement Expectations
This is a highly project-oriented environment.
Key expectations:
- Supporting approximately 10 active applications undergoing enhancements and modifications
- Working across multiple projects simultaneously
- Participating in Agile delivery teams
- Collaborating with:
- Project Managers
- Data Engineers
- Scrum Teams
- Product Owners
- Other DBAs
Strong communication skills and previous project-based DBA experience are highly desirable.
