Company Description Indesignlabs is a consumer product design consultancy specializing in turning complex mechanical ideas into manufacturable, production-ready hardware. Founded in 2011 by an IIT Delhi Mechanical Engineering alumnus with extensive hands-on experience, the studio partners with startups and established companies building consumer durables, mechanical systems, and plastic-intensive products. The team’s expertise spans mechanism design, plastic enclosure development, and end-to-end ownership from concept through tooling-ready, factory-viable designs grounded in DFM, DFA, and tolerance control.
With deep proficiency in SolidWorks, KeyShot, and advanced CAD workflows, Indesignlabs focuses on resolving engineering risks early, long before they become production issues. The consultancy is known for working with international clients who value clear thinking, decisive engineering, and designs that reliably survive vendor interaction, tooling, and mass production.
Role Description This full time remote Mechanical Design Engineer role involves end-to-end ownership of mechanical and product design tasks for consumer hardware projects. The engineer will translate product requirements into robust mechanisms, plastic enclosures, and assemblies, using CAD tools to create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings suitable for tooling and mass production. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing design calculations, evaluating materials and manufacturing processes, and applying DFM/DFA principles to ensure reliability,
cost-effectiveness, and scalability.
The role also requires close collaboration with internal stakeholders and external vendors to iterate designs, address tolerance and fit issues, and resolve manufacturing risks early. The engineer will document design decisions, maintain organized CAD data, and contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, workflows, and best practices within the studio.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering, including mechanics, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in Design Engineering and Machine Design, with the ability to create functional mechanisms and durable assemblies.
- Experience in Product Design for consumer hardware, focusing on plastic enclosure development and production-ready design.
- Advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) skills, preferably in SolidWorks, with capability to produce detailed 3D models and engineering drawings.
- Practical knowledge of DFM, DFA, tolerance analysis, and design for injection molding or other high-volume processes.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting, manage multiple projects, and communicate clearly with cross-functional teams and vendors.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience taking products from concept to mass production is highly beneficial; familiarity with vendor interaction and tooling is a plus.
