Job Summary

The Chemistry Lab In-Charge is responsible for overseeing all chemical processes related to jewellery hallmarking, purity testing, metal analysis, and chemical management in the manufacturing facility. The role ensures accurate assay results, safe handling of chemicals (including acids used in hallmarking), proper documentation, and compliance with BIS/ISO standards.

Key Responsibilities1. Hallmark & Purity Testing Operations

- Perform and supervise fire assay (cupellation) to determine purity of gold, silver, and other precious metals.
- Conduct chemical tests such as Acid Testing, Touchstone Testing, and Electrolytic Testing where applicable.
- Operate advanced analytical instruments such as ICP-OES, XRF Spectrometer, and AAS for metal analysis.
- Verify and record hallmark-related test results ensuring compliance with BIS Hallmarking Standards (IS 1417/IS 15820).
- Calibrate testing equipment and maintain accuracy of measurements.

2. Chemical Handling & Lab Management

- Manage daily preparation, storage, and safe handling of hallmark-related chemicals (e.g., nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, aqua regia, sodium hydroxide).
- Maintain chemical inventory, MSDS documentation,



and ensure proper labeling and safe disposal.
- Implement strict chemical hygiene and safety protocols to avoid contamination or hazardous exposure.
- Monitor environmental controls such as fume hoods, ventilation, and spill response kits.

3. Compliance & Documentation

- Maintain accurate lab records, test reports, chemical consumption logs, and calibration certificates.
- Ensure lab processes comply with BIS hallmarking requirements, internal SOPs, and statutory environmental norms.
- Prepare reports for audits, inspections, and certifications (BIS, ISO 9001, factory inspections, etc.).

4. Quality Assurance & Process Control

- Support production teams by providing quick and accurate alloy composition feedback.
- Identify and troubleshoot deviations in metal purity, process chemicals, or assay results.
- Recommend improvements in metal recovery, assay processes, and chemical usage efficiency.
