Profile- Unit Manager (with rolling mill and furnace operations in Steel Industry)

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Unit Manager with strong hands-on knowledge of the steel manufacturing industry, particularly rolling mill and furnace operations. The candidate will be responsible for managing overall plant/unit operations, production, manpower, quality, maintenance coordination, safety, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

- Manage and supervise day-to-day operations of the steel manufacturing unit.
- Have strong technical knowledge of rolling mill operations, furnace operations, reheating furnace and steel processing.
- Plan and monitor daily, weekly, and monthly production targets.
- Ensure smooth and efficient operation of rolling mills and furnaces.
- Monitor production parameters, yield, rejection, wastage, power/fuel consumption and overall productivity.
- Coordinate with Production, Maintenance, Quality, Stores, Dispatch and Purchase teams.
- Identify operational issues and take timely corrective actions to minimize downtime and production losses.
- Ensure proper utilization of raw materials, billets, scrap, fuel, power and other resources.
- Monitor product quality and ensure production is as per required specifications and customer requirements.
- Implement systems for improving production efficiency, yield and cost control.
- Manage and guide plant operators, supervisors, technicians and other shop-floor manpower.
- Ensure proper manpower planning and shift management.
- Coordinate with the maintenance team for preventive and breakdown maintenance of plant machinery.
- Ensure strict compliance with safety, fire, environmental and statutory requirements.
- Conduct regular shop-floor inspections and ensure adherence to SOPs.
- Prepare and review production and operational reports for management.




- Lead initiatives related to process improvement, productivity enhancement and cost reduction.
- Handle operational emergencies and resolve production-related issues effectively.

Required Technical Knowledge

- Solid understanding of steel manufacturing processes.
- Hands-on knowledge of rolling mill operations.
- Knowledge of reheating furnace / induction furnace / melting furnace operations.
- Understanding of billet heating, rolling parameters, temperature control and material flow.
- Knowledge of mill setup, production planning and process control.
- Understanding of steel grades, quality parameters and testing requirements.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Good understanding of power, fuel and consumable optimization.
- Knowledge of industrial safety and shop-floor practices.

Candidate Profile

- 8–15 years of experience in steel manufacturing/rolling mill operations.
- Candidates currently working as Unit Manager, Plant Manager, Production Manager, Works Manager, Rolling Mill Manager or Senior Production Manager will be preferred.
- Strong experience in managing steel rolling mill and furnace operations is mandatory.
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving and team-management skills.
- Ability to work in a production-oriented, target-driven environment.
- Strong communication and coordination skills.

Qualification

B.Tech / B.E. / Diploma in Mechanical, Metallurgy, Production or related engineering field.
