As BelleVie continues to scale, our technology platform is becoming critical digital infrastructure for the communities we serve. We are looking for an experienced AVP Engineering (Backend) to lead the architecture, scalability, reliability, engineering execution and people behind this platform.

THE ROLE

This is a senior engineering leadership role with end-to-end ownership of BelleVie’s backend engineering ecosystem.

You will lead the backend engineering team and own the platform across system architecture, services, data, APIs, scalability, reliability, engineering quality, technology operations and people development.

We are looking for more than a people manager. You should be a strong technology leader who has personally built and scaled complex consumer technology platforms, understands systems deeply, can challenge architectural decisions, and remains close enough to engineering and code to have a well-informed technical point of view.

You will work closely with Product, Mobile, QA, DevOps, Data and business leadership to ensure technology choices translate into better customer experiences, faster execution, higher reliability and sustainable scale.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

System Design & Architecture

• Own and evolve the backend architecture across microservices, APIs, data and integrations

• Define the target architecture and technology roadmap for the next phase of scale

• Establish clear service boundaries and scalable system design principles

• Drive architecture reviews and maintain high engineering standards

• Design secure, scalable and highly optimised RESTful services

• Continuously simplify architecture and systematically address technical debt

• Evaluate technology choices based on scalability, reliability, maintainability, performance and business needs

Scalability, Reliability & Performance

• Architect for scalability, high availability, fault tolerance and performance

• Establish capacity planning, load testing and proactive performance management

• Build strong observability across application and infrastructure layers

• Strengthen monitoring, alerting and incident detection

• Identify performance bottlenecks and drive optimisation to root cause





• Reduce incident frequency and blast radius through better architecture and engineering practices

• Treat infrastructure utilisation and cost efficiency as engineering metrics

Engineering & Delivery Excellence

• Own engineering execution from design through production

• Translate product and business requirements into robust technical plans

• Establish architecture, coding, review and engineering standards

• Ensure meaningful code reviews focused on scalability, maintainability, security and performance

• Improve development velocity without compromising engineering quality

• Drive predictable releases and continuously improve the software delivery lifecycle

• Stay hands-on enough to review critical designs, troubleshoot complex problems and contribute technically when required

End-to-End Technology Operations

• Own the complete lifecycle — design, build, test, release, monitor and support

• Establish strong release, incident, problem and change management practices

• Define meaningful SLAs/SLOs for business-critical services

• Strengthen production monitoring, on-call practices and incident response

• Drive root-cause analysis and ensure corrective actions translate into permanent improvements

• Embed security, privacy and data protection into engineering and architecture by design

Team & Leadership

• Lead, mentor and inspire a high-performing backend engineering team

• Identify and develop technical leads and module owners with clear accountability

• Grow senior engineers into independent technical and people leaders

• Establish clear engineering KPIs and performance expectations

• Coach engineers through architecture reviews, technical feedback and structured development plans

• Attract, hire and retain exceptional engineering talent

• Build succession and reduce dependency on individual engineers

• Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement

Data Structures & Algorithms, Observability, Performance Optimisation and Debugging

Experience with payment gateways and large-scale mobile application backends would be valuable.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience, including engineering leadership experience

• Proven experience designing and scaling high-performance, highly available and fault-tolerant consumer platforms

• Strong expertise in system design, distributed systems and microservice architecture

• Strong understanding of Data Structures & Algorithms

• Deep hands-on experience with Node.js and scalable API development

• Strong experience with MongoDB / MongoDB Atlas and database/query optimisation

• Strong understanding of AWS and cloud-native architecture

• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, caching, queues and asynchronous processing

• Experience running production technology operations end to end

• Strong debugging, analytical and performance optimisation capabilities

• Proven ability to mentor engineers and develop technical leaders

• Strong communication and stakeholder-management capabilities

• Customer-centric mindset with strong ownership and bias for execution

A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related discipline is preferred, though we place greater emphasis on what you have built, scaled and led.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

In your first few months, we expect you to develop a deep understanding of BelleVie’s architecture, engineering organisation and production ecosystem; establish clear technology and performance baselines; define the target architecture and engineering standards; strengthen ownership across the team; and begin delivering measurable improvements across scalability, reliability, observability, engineering quality and execution.

Over time, success means building a platform that can scale significantly beyond today’s requirements — and an engineering organisation capable of operating that platform without depending on any single individual.
