Job description: Position: Quality Metallurgical Lab Technician

Department: Quality / Metallurgy Laboratory

Reporting To: Head of laboratory

Location: Plant Laboratory

Qualification & Experience: Diploma Metallurgy / Mechanical, 3-4 years of experience

Technical Skills Required: Microscopy, sample prep, weld testing, Millipore procedure

To support the Quality and Metallurgy function by conducting metallurgical tests and evaluations to ensure that materials, weld quality, and cleanliness levels meet specified standards and customer requirements. The role involves operating and maintaining metallography equipment, performing weld penetration testing, conducting Millipore contamination testing, and ensuring accurate documentation and traceability of all test results.

The Metallurgical Lab Technician works in the plant’s metallurgical laboratory, supporting production, quality assurance, and product development activities. The role involves testing aluminium components, weld samples, and machining outputs to verify material integrity, weld penetration, microstructure, and contamination levels.

The technician operates specialized metallurgical equipment such as cutting machines, mounting presses, polishing machines, optical microscopes, weld penetration test setups, and Millipore testing apparatus. The role requires adherence to laboratory procedures, calibration requirements, and quality management system standards (such as IATF 16949 / ISO standards) to ensure reliable and traceable results that support manufacturing and customer compliance.

3. Major Challenges

1. Ensuring accuracy and repeatability of metallurgical test results while handling sensitive laboratory equipment.

2. Maintaining equipment in proper working condition and ensuring calibration and preventive maintenance.

3. Handling urgent testing requests from production without compromising testing procedures and documentation requirements.

Preparing metallographic samples without introducing preparation artifacts that could affect microstructure interpretation.

5. Maintaining contamination-free environments for Millipore testing to ensure reliable cleanliness measurement.

6. Coordinating with production and quality teams for timely analysis of weld penetration and metallurgical failures.

7. Metallography Testing

- Prepare metallographic samples through sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching.
- Conduct microstructure examination using optical microscopes.
- Document and report metallurgical observations related to grain structure, defects, or abnormalities.

- Weld Penetration Testing

- Prepare weld cross-sections and perform penetration evaluation as per defined standards.
- Support welding process validation by verifying penetration depth and weld integrity.
- Record and communicate results to the welding and quality teams.

- Millipore Cleanliness Testing

- Conduct Millipore testing to assess contamination levels in machined components and assemblies.
- Maintain cleanliness of testing apparatus and ensure proper filtration and weighing procedures.
- Record results and support investigation of contamination sources.

- Laboratory Equipment Management

- Operate and maintain metallography equipment such as cutting machines, mounting presses, polishing machines, microscopes, and testing setups.
- Ensure calibration status, maintenance records, and proper handling of laboratory instruments.

- Documentation and Quality Compliance

- Maintain test records, reports, and traceability in accordance with the plant Quality Management System.
- Support internal and external audits by providing required test records and documentation.

- Support to Quality and Production

- Assist in root cause analysis related to weld defects, material issues, or contamination.
- Provide metallurgical test support for process validation, new product development, and customer investigations.

Job Types : Full time, Permanent

Pay: ₹22,000.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
