DOCOTRAL DEGREE OPPORTUNITY ON APPLICATION BASED INVESTIGATIONS USING RF/ECR PLASMA SOURCES AT PLASMA LAB, IIT DELHI (RAMESH NARAYANAN)
Opportunity to register for a Doctoral [Ph. D.] Degree at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) for aspiring young researchers who have recently completed or are in the final semester of their master's degree. Bachelor students' having appropriate qualifications may also apply. Please refer to the information brochure, Semester 2, 2026-27 in the following link:
https://owncloud.iitd.ac.in/nextcloud/index.php/s/4ZZBABcPgqybGYS
for more details regarding the Institute minimum criteria. The departments may have a higher shortlisting criteria which will be uploaded in the department website in due course.
Last date of submission of application in the IITD portal (https://ecampus.iitd.ac.in/PGADM/login) is October 29, 20256.
The Doctoral Degree opportunity with Prof. Ramesh Narayanan [https://iitd.irins.org/profile/85685] as a supervisor can be availed under the following departments.
1. Department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), Hauz Khas, New Delhi, India [Website: https://dese.iitd.ac.in/].
2. School of Interdisciplinary Research (SIRe), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), Hauz Khas, New Delhi, India [Website: https://sire.iitd.ac.in]. Details of proposals offered by Prof. Ramesh Narayanan under SIRe can be viewed in page 3 of the website: https://sire.iitd.ac.in/apply
Project proposals would be related to the development and characterization of high-frequency plasma sources for energy or environment applications, which include (a) large area sources for ion beams for fusion-like devices, (b) space plasma thrusters, (c) diagnostic development suitable for plasma chemistry for organics in space and large area plasma processing, (d)
plasma-based waste treatment.
Application Process:
National Students can apply in either or both the departments (DESE and/or SIRe) from the IIT Delhi application portal:
https://ecampus.iitd.ac.in/PGADM/login
International Students can apply in either or both the departments (DESE and/or SIRe) from the IIT Delhi application portal:
https://ecampus.iitd.ac.in/IPGADM/login
If you satisfy the respective department shortlisting criteria and are found eligible by the respective interview panel as well as meet all administrative requirements of the Institute, you would be offered the chance to work as a doctoral scholar in the concerned department. It may be noted that depending on the problem and expertise required of the supervisors, a co-supervisor may also be mentoring the selected student.
Activities of the Doctoral Student:
The student will have to pass the department credit requirements within the first year as well as plan the research problem during the same period, which has to be successfully defended in front of a committee within the first 18 months. The student will have access to the supervisor's lab while working on the research problem. Once the proposal is reviewed and approved by a Research Committee, the student is expected to work on the same addressing the goals that was set initially. As a supervisor, I will be mentoring the student in the research problem during the entire phase.
The student will be expected to carry out both experiment and modelling work as part of the thesis work.
NOTE:
For large area sources for ion beams for fusion-like devices & plasma-based thrusters problem
Engineering students with a background in electronics and instrumentation, if found suitable, may also be considered.
- An exposure to high power supplies and / or vacuum systems may be preferable.
- Some knowledge of design and fabrication of electrical and electronic circuits is preferable.
For diagnostic and code development suitable for investigating plasma chemistry and large area plasma processing & plasma-based waste management problem
