Role – Functional Safety Lead Exp
- 6
- 12 years Area of Responsibility
• Lead functional safety engineering across the complete product development lifecycle, establishing technical direction, plans, interfaces, deliverables, reviews, evidence and acceptance criteria required for compliant programmed delivery.
• Act as the lead functional safety engineer and subject matter expert, providing authoritative interpretation and proportionate application of ISO 26262 to customer programmed, products, platforms and distributed development responsibilities.
• Plan, coordinate and technically direct functional safety activities across customer, TTL, OEM, Tier-1 and specialist partner teams, ensuring clear ownership and consistent engineering quality.
• Develop, maintain and support governance of the Functional Safety Plan, including lifecycle activities, responsibilities, milestones, dependencies, reviews, evidence and completion status.
• Lead or assure Item Definition, Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, ASIL classification, Safety Goals and Functional Safety Concept development.
• Lead or assure Technical Safety Concepts, functional and technical safety requirements, allocation to systems, hardware, software and external measures, and bidirectional traceability to verification evidence.
• Provide functional safety leadership within powertrain and propulsion system development, including torque generation and control, engine or e-drive management, transmission interfaces, energy management, start-stop, thermal protection, diagnostics, degradation and safe-state strategies as applicable.
• Assess cross-domain safety interactions between powertrain, braking, motion control, ADAS, vehicle supervisory control, body systems, E&E; architecture, networks and external interfaces.
• Define and govern safety analyses including FMEA, FTA, DFA and dependent failure analysis, ensuring assumptions, failure modes, safety mechanisms and recommended actions are technically robust and resolved.
• Support system, hardware and software architecture development, including functional decomposition, independence, freedom from interference, redundancy, monitoring, fault handling and ASIL decomposition where appropriate.
• Develop and manage Development Interface Agreements and functional safety responsibilities across customer, Tata Technologies, OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers and third parties.
• Review and approve supplier safety plans, concepts, analyses, requirements, architectural evidence, verification results and Safety Cases; identify gaps and drive corrective actions to closure.
• Lead functional safety reviews and technical decision forums with powertrain, systems, architecture, hardware,
software, calibration, integration, validation, quality, cybersecurity and supplier stakeholders.
• Support confirmation reviews, functional safety audits and assessments, coordinating with internal or independent reviewers and ensuring findings are resolved with objective evidence.
• Maintain clear functional safety status reporting across work products, maturity, risks, assumptions, dependencies, open findings, supplier evidence and programmed gateways.
• Lead change-impact assessment for safety-related changes to requirements, architecture, hardware, software, calibration, interfaces, intended use or operating environment.
• Ensure safety requirements are linked to verification methods, test specifications, analyses and objective evidence, and that anomalies are assessed for functional safety impact.
• Develop, structure and assure complex nested Safety Cases across vehicle, powertrain system, subsystem, hardware, software and supplier levels, maintaining explicit argumentation, evidence, assumptions and traceability.
• Support integration, calibration, verification, vehicle build, launch and production-readiness activities by resolving safety concerns, confirming release constraints and maintaining clear safety acceptance status.
• Mentor functional safety engineers and wider engineering teams, building capability and promoting consistent, pragmatic and high-quality safety engineering practice. Knowledge / Experience Essential:
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical, electronic, automotive, control systems, software, mechatronics or a related engineering discipline, or an equivalent level of relevant experience.
• Extensive automotive functional safety experience, with demonstrable responsibility for leading safety engineering activities across complete vehicle, system, hardware or software development lifecycles.
• Expert working knowledge of ISO 26262, including concept, system, hardware, software, supporting processes, production considerations, safety management and confirmation measures.
• Proven experience leading complex functional safety workstreams and coordinating delivery across distributed engineering organizations.
• Experience developing and assuring Item Definitions, HARA, Safety Goals, Functional Safety Concepts, Technical Safety Concepts,
safety requirements and Safety Cases.
• Strong practical capability in safety analysis methods including FMEA, FTA, DFA and dependent failure analysis.
• Experience of functional safety planning, technical governance, review, audit or assessment support, compliance tracking and programmed-gateway reporting.
• Experience managing safety interfaces and evidence across OEM, engineering service provider and Tier-1 supplier boundaries.
• Strong understanding of automotive E&E; architecture, embedded systems, hardware-software interfaces, diagnostics, communications, fault handling and vehicle operating states.
• Demonstrable ability to review complex technical evidence, identify safety gaps, make sound risk-based recommendations and drive corrective action to closure.
• Strong stakeholder leadership, facilitation, technical writing, negotiation and customer communication skills, including the confidence to challenge constructively at senior level.
• Experience using requirements, lifecycle or safety-analysis toolsets such as DOORS, DOORS Next, Polarion, Codebeamer, Medini Analyze, Ansys or equivalent. Desirable:
• Strong functional safety experience within the powertrain or propulsion domain, covering internal-combustion, hybrid or battery-electric applications.
• Knowledge of powertrain controls and interfaces such as torque management, engine or e-drive control, transmission, energy management, thermal protection, calibration, diagnostics, degradation and limp-home strategies.
• Experience developing and assuring complex nested Safety Cases across vehicle, system, subsystem, hardware, software and supplier levels.
• Experience within the commercial vehicle sector, including buses, trucks, coaches, special-purpose vehicles or stripped-chassis platforms.
• Experience of multi-party vehicle development involving OEMs, platform providers, body builders, Tier-1 suppliers and engineering service organizations.
