What you'll do...

About Team:

The Store & OPD (Online Pickup and Delivery) Tech organization builds and operates the mission-critical backend platforms that power Walmart's store fulfillment experience. Our flagship platform, GIF (Global Integrated Fulfillment), orchestrates the end-to-end order lifecycle inside the store – from pre-pick and picking, through staging, quality check and packing, to dispense and handoff to customers and delivery drivers – across the US, Canada, Mexico, Sam's Club and Massmart markets. We run distributed gateway/BFF, order-management and fulfillment services at very high scale on a cloud-native, event-driven architecture (Java/Spring Boot, Kafka, Cosmos DB/SQL, Kubernetes), across multiple regions with active resiliency and disaster-recovery practices. Store fulfillment volume is expected to roughly double by 2030, and the team is actively simplifying and consolidating services, adopting multi-tenancy, improving resiliency (circuit breakers, timeouts, rate limiting, canary rollouts, failover automation) and enabling next-generation store capacity solutions such as automation and dense storage.

Engineers on this team own their systems end to end – architecture, coding, performance, reliability, observability, deployments and production support – and partner closely with product, store operations and platform teams to deliver a best-in-class experience for store associates, customers and drivers.

What you’ll do:

· Understand store and OPD business problems and translate them into scalable technology solutions. · Architect, design, build and deploy high-throughput, low-latency distributed services and event-driven pipelines.

· Lead architecture and design reviews; drive service simplification, multi-tenancy, multi-region resiliency and disaster-recovery capabilities.

· Own production excellence: troubleshoot complex incidents using logs, metrics, traces and profiling,

drive root-cause analysis and prevent recurrence.

· Raise the bar on sustainable engineering through best practices, high-quality code, documentation, automated testing, observability and monitoring.

· Apply AI/GenAI tools across coding, code review, testing, debugging, RCA and documentation – with disciplined validation of AI output – and help the team adopt agentic engineering workflows.

· Estimate effort, identify risks and plan execution across teams and releases.

· Mentor and coach engineers and provide technical leadership to the team.

· Rise above the details as needed to spot broader issues and trends and their implications for the product and the team as a whole.

What you’ll bring:

· 10+ years of experience designing and developing highly scalable applications in product-based companies or R&D; divisions, with recent hands-on backend coding and Staff-level technical ownership.

· 5+ years of experience building microservices in Java (Spring/Spring Boot); exceptional Go engineers with equivalent distributed-systems depth who can work in Java may also be considered.

· Strong computer science fundamentals – data structures, algorithms, concurrency, networking and problem solving.

· Deep distributed-systems expertise: microservices, event-driven design, consistency, idempotency, partitioning, retries/timeouts, backpressure, fault isolation and failure recovery.

· Experience building and operating high-throughput, low-latency systems, including performance tuning and caching.

· Hands-on experience with messaging and data platforms – Kafka plus SQL/NoSQL stores (e.g., Cosmos DB, Cassandra, MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle); ability to reason about scale, schema evolution and data access patterns.

· Cloud-native engineering: Kubernetes, CI/CD, automated testing and observability, with strong ownership of production readiness and reliability.

· Excellent production troubleshooting skills: logs, metrics, traces, thread dumps/profiling, incident mitigation and root-cause analysis.

· Practical, advanced use of AI/GenAI tools in day-to-day engineering, with disciplined validation of the output.

· Staff-level influence: architecture reviews, mentoring, raising engineering standards and collaborating across teams.

· Excellent organisation, communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice to have:

· Go experience in addition to Java. · Redis/Memcached, Cassandra/Cosmos DB and high-scale data-modeling experience.

· Multi-region/multi-tenant architecture, disaster recovery, resilience/chaos testing and SRE practices.

· Azure/GCP experience and deep Kubernetes/container platform knowledge.

· Experience building reusable platform/framework capabilities and developer tooling.

· Retail, fulfillment, logistics, marketplace or other real-time mission-critical domain experience.

· Experience building or integrating agentic/LLM-based engineering workflows, not only consuming AI assistants.
