Lab technician -Job description

• Receive, verify, label and register patient samples, checking for identification, adequacy and sample integrity.

• Perform routine and special tests in the assigned department(s) as per approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

• Operate, calibrate and perform daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of analysers and laboratory instruments.

• Run internal quality control (IQC), participate in external quality assurance schemes (EQAS) and document corrective actions.

• Record, verify and enter results accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS); report critical values promptly to the Pathologist/Supervisor.

• Maintain turnaround times (TAT) and prioritise urgent and emergency samples.

• Prepare reagents, stains,



controls and culture media; monitor reagent stock and inform the supervisor of shortages.

• Follow biosafety, infection control and biomedical waste management protocols at all times.

• Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the workstation, refrigerators and storage areas, including temperature logs.

• Support audits and inspections and keep all records, registers and documentation up to date.
