An Automation Engineer (Android) builds and maintains the automated tests and tooling that keep our Android app secure and releases on schedule. The role centers on using Appium with TypeScript (e.g. WebdriverIO) to automate native Android app workflows on emulators and real devices, backed by API checks that validate what happens behind the UI. AI coding agents (Copilot, Cursor, etc.) are part of the daily routine, used to write tests faster, investigate failures, and keep suites maintainable over time. This engineer owns Android testing for their product areas and decides how best to cover them, while sharing frameworks, standards, and code reviews with the wider automation team. Roles and
Responsibilities:
• Design and develop automated tests for Android app features, workflows, and regression testing using Appium and TypeScript
• Implement and maintain test frameworks, and tools, including screen objects, device and capability configuration, and shared utilities.
• Collaborate with Android developers and cross-functional teams to improve app testability (e.g. stable accessibility IDs) and identify automation opportunities.
• Troubleshoot, stabilize, and enhance existing automated tests, with a focus on reducing flakiness caused by timing, device state, and environment issues.
• Ensure automated solutions align with business and technical requirements.
• Integrate mobile tests into release pipelines, including app build handling and emulator or device provisioning, and help keep them reliable.
• Stay up to date on emerging AI technologies and mobile testing best practices. Skills Required:
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript, with hands-on experience automating native Android apps using Appium (UiAutomator2 driver) and WebdriverIO or a similar client.
• Solid working knowledge of the Android platform: app lifecycle, permissions, ADB, Android Studio, emulators (AVDs), and inspecting UI hierarchies with tools such as Appium Inspector.
• Experience building CI/CD pipelines in GitHub and/or GitLab, including running mobile test suites on emulators or device clouds.
• Independently diagnose and resolve complex test failures using device logs (logcat), screenshots, and screen recordings.
• Comfortable with API testing and writing SQL to validate backend state, verify data integrity after app and API operations, and manage test data across environments.
• Working skills with at least one coding agents.
